Description
Vineyard
The Spice Route Chakalaka 2023 comes from predominantly unirrigated bush vines planted in deep, iron-rich Koffieklip and Oakleaf soils in the Swartland. Each variety was selected for its ability to thrive in the region’s harsh growing conditions and to express the unique Swartland terroir. Yields ranged between 2.5 and 4.5 tons per hectare, resulting in concentrated fruit with depth and character.
Winemaking
The grapes were hand-harvested, destalked, and lightly crushed before fermentation in open concrete fermenters. Manual punch-downs took place during fermentation to extract colour and flavour. The wines were then transferred to barrel for malolactic fermentation and further ageing. Each component matured separately in seasoned French and American oak for 12 months before blending. After blending, the final wine returned to old oak barrels for additional maturation.
Tasting Notes
Spice Route Chakalaka 2023 opens with deep aromas of dark berries, black tea, cocoa, and sweet oak. The palate bursts with cranberry and red berry fruit layered with cinnamon and clove spice. Fresh, integrated tannins create a velvety texture, while the finish remains bold, smooth, and complex.
Food Recommendation
This wine pairs beautifully with slow-cooked lamb shoulder, cassoulet, or hearty mushroom and lentil stew. Roasted root vegetables also complement its earthy spice and vibrant fruit profile.
