Description

Vineyard

The Spice Route Pinotage 2000 comes from bush vines at Klein Amos Kuil in Malmesbury, planted on deep red Malmesbury shales. These soils hold moisture well, making them ideal for dryland farming. At 25 years of age during harvest, the vines yielded just 2.8 tons per hectare, producing small berries with intense flavour. The vineyard’s south-facing slope and cooling sea breezes allowed the grapes to ripen evenly, while maintaining freshness.

Tasting Notes

In the glass, the wine shows a dark, inky purple colour. Aromas of spicy red fruit, dried figs, banana and vanilla rise immediately, leading to a palate filled with rich, silky fruit. French oak barrels from Demptos and Vicard enhanced the wine with tobacco and tar notes, adding depth and structure. As a result, the wine balances fruit intensity with savoury complexity, finishing long and smooth.

Food Pairing

The Spice Route Pinotage 2000 matches naturally with hearty fare. Roasted venison, lamb or matured cheeses highlight its savoury side, while slow-cooked stews and grilled meats complement its richness

Cellar Potential

At release, the 2000 vintage was structured for ageing. With proper cellaring, it continued to develop layered aromas and flavours, rewarding patience. Many bottles still carry remarkable depth today, showing how gracefully Pinotage can evolve.
