Description
Vineyard
The vineyards that shape Spice Route Chakalaka 2022 lie in the rugged Swartland, where unirrigated bush vines grow in deep, iron-rich Koffieklip and Oakleaf soils. Yields are modest between 2.5 and 4.5 tons per hectare, but this low production ensures concentrated flavours. Each grape variety was chosen for its ability to thrive under the region’s hot, dry conditions. The blend is a true mosaic: 27% Shiraz, 20% Mataro, 17% Carignan, 13% Durif, 13% Grenache Noir, and 10% Tannat. Together they create a wine that reflects the Swartland’s bold character and resilience.
Tasting Notes
Spice Route Chakalaka 2022 opens with aromas of dark berries, black tea, and a subtle hint of cocoa, gently lifted by sweet oak. The palate is generous and layered, with cranberry and red berries at the core, enriched by warm notes of cinnamon and clove. Fresh, finely knit tannins give balance and elegance, while the finish is both velvety and bold, lingering with spice and complexity. This is a wine made for sharing, embodying its namesake a South African spice blend that celebrates flavour and togetherness.
