Description
Vineyard
The Vinoteque Chakalaka 2011 originates from dryland vineyards in the Swartland. Shiraz, the backbone of the blend, was grown on trellised Oakleaf soils, while the other varieties — Mourvèdre, Carignan, Grenache, Tannat and Petit Sirah — came from old bushvines rooted in Oakleaf and koffieklip soils. These naturally low-yielding vineyards produced fruit of concentration and balance, with each component adding its own personality to the final blend.
Tasting Notes
Time in bottle has added poise to this vintage. What began as a bold, fruit-driven wine has now evolved into a layered and elegant expression. Smoky cloves and savoury spice still lead the nose, but the fruit has mellowed into dried plum, black cherry and subtle earthy tones. On the palate, the tannins have softened, creating a smooth texture while spice and oak integrate seamlessly. The finish is long, savoury and complex, making it a rewarding red for those who appreciate maturity.
Food Pairing
With its maturity and spice-driven profile, this wine pairs effortlessly with slow-cooked dishes. Think braised lamb shanks, rich beef stews, or venison. It also complements charcuterie, earthy vegetarian meals and traditional South African cuisine.
Cellar Potential
The Vinoteque Chakalaka 2011 is drinking beautifully now, with its tannins rounded and its flavours fully integrated. While further ageing is possible, this vintage shows the benefits of careful cellaring and is best enjoyed over the next two to three years.
