Spice Route Viognier

R100

“The 2016 vintage was characterised by dry and hot growing conditions, which resulted in a much earlier harvest. The intense fruit character of Viognier is complimented by the rocky shale soils it grows on and well-supported by the neutral oak vessels. A bold but elegant style of wine with very good aging potential. Enjoy!” – Charl du Plessis

Description

Five centuries ago the ancient mariners braved uncharted seas to round the Cape of Good Hope in search of exotic spices. Their nerve and dash inspire the Spice Route philosophy. We have found our signature wine style in the rolling hills along the Cape’s West Coast, where unirrigated vines produce grapes with small thick skinned berries – ripe fruit that is dense, rich and full flavoured. A passionate dedication to exceptional quality and traditional hand crafting captures the essence of this fruit in the wines of the Spice Route.

IN THE VINEYARD:

The Viognier is grown on deep Malmesbury shale soils on Klein Amoskuil farm. This un-irrigated bushvine was planted in 2001, yielding the lowest crop on the farm, at an average of just 2.7 ton per hectare.

HARVEST DATE

18 January 2016

WINEMAKING:

The grapes were hand-picked at 24.5 degree Balling. Bunches were pressed whole, extracting only the delicate must. The wine went straight to old French barrels for fermentation and 10 months maturation on the lees before bottling.

TASTING NOTE:

Aromas of stone fruit and acacia blossom. The palate is a complex weave of bold fruit and bright savoury flavours, well- balanced apricot and delicate spice. Our viognier always benefits from a few years of bottle maturation.
