Description
Vineyard
The Spice Route Flagship Syrah 2001 was produced from cordon-pruned vines at Rheeboksfontein in Malmesbury. The vineyard lies on a south-facing slope at 150 metres above sea level, where cooling sea breezes temper the heat of the day and preserve balance in the grapes. Rooted in red ferric Oakleaf soils, which retain moisture well, the 14-year-old vines yielded just 5 tons per hectare in 2001. These small, concentrated berries laid the foundation for a Syrah of intensity and depth.
Tasting Notes
Deep inky ruby in colour, the wine opens with aromas of smoky bacon, exotic spice and dark brooding fruit. The palate is full yet refined, showing a rounded, dry texture with vibrant lift. Sixteen months in French oak barrels brought classical structure, adding savoury layers without overwhelming the fruit. With age, the wine has revealed striking poise, showing both power and elegance in equal measure.
Food Pairing
This Syrah is a natural companion to bold, savoury dishes. Pair it with slow-cooked lamb shank, grilled ribeye, venison or rich stews. Its smoky, spicy notes also make it an excellent partner for charcuterie and hard, aged cheeses.
Cellar Potential
The Spice Route Flagship Syrah 2001 was crafted with ageing in mind. Designed to develop over at least three to five years, it has since evolved gracefully, rewarding collectors with added complexity and polish. Today, it remains a benchmark bottling for those who value both structure and story in a Syrah.
